As a photographer still experiencing all my firsts, I feel nervous some times when shooting in completely new settings or different situations. I had planned a session with these three cuties but almost cancelled it due to rain. Usually I would have cancelled it, but I had an idea. I started researching the pros and cons to shooting on rainy days. And decided to go ahead.
I asked their mom to dress them in bright colors and rain boots if they had them. Also some umbrellas in case it rained hard. I arrived, and they looked ADORABLE!
During the shoot, the kids weren't in the happiest moods, but the photos turned out cute. I learned a lot about shooting kids in any circumstance and making it fun. Including how to manage fighting siblings in bad moods. (she's quite a model, isn't she?)
TIPS:
- Bright clothes. When I didn't put the photos in black and white, the kids totally stood out against the dreary gray back lighting and background.
- For shooting kids, make it fun. Tell them where to be, but make sure they get to do some of the crazy poses they want to do. This one above was completely his idea. He said, OOOoo I'm gonna be Mary Poppins... Hang on!" and leaped into the air. So cute, right? Play games, let them see the photos as you take them, and let them be themselves. Someone who showed me this was: http://brentmailphotography.com/photography-tips/kids-beach-shoot-in-the-rain.html - also let them jump in puddles. :)
- Black & white looks great on rainy day photos. After the shoot as I started experimenting with editing, I discovered that black and white looked good because there were no sharp shadows on the faces. The sun was blocked by the dark clouds.
I am by no means a professional photographer. Simply a semi. :) This is what i found to be helpful, and wanted to share to any growing photographers out there like my self. Thanks for reading. Leave comments below if you have any other tips for me or viewers.
Aww, they're so cute! Great ideas. *smile*
